Everything tastes better with a sauce! Well… almost everything. However sauces can take time that we don’t always have. Especially during a busy work week with hockey practice, dance lessons, music lessons, and “Mommm, drive me to my friend’s house for a study session!” Yeah right… study?
So here are a few quick and easy sauces to make to serve alongside your meal.
Honey Dill Sauce: It’s super easy to make and uses ingredients already in your cupboard.
- 1/2 cup mayo
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 Tbsp dried dill
Simply mix the three ingredients together in small bowl and serve! It’s great with chicken strips, on sandwiches, or with sweet potato fries.
Hollandaise Sauce: Most common over Eggs Benedict this sauce is also great over salmon, beef, asparagus, and brussel sprouts.
- 3 slightly beaten egg yolks
- 1/2 cup butter (real butter, margarine does not work well)
- 2 Tbsp lemon juice
Cut the butter into 3 equal pieces. In a double boiler on a medium low heat melt 1 portion of the butter. Mix in the 2 Tbsp of lemon juice. Stirring constantly add the 3 egg yolks. Add in the next portion of butter, stirring constantly as it melts. Add in the last portion of butter still stirring constantly. When the sauce is thick but runny it’s ready! Pour it over your favourite food and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Serve immediately!
Oriental Orange Sauce: This is great as a marinade or a sauce. It can be served over any meat but also pairs well with green beans or rice.
- 1 cup Orange marmalade (opt. replace with mango or peach jam, they are just as tasty!)
- 2/3 cup BBQ sauce
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- (opt. 1 tsp grated ginger root)
Mix all the ingredients together in a small sauce pan. Heat on a medium setting stirring occasionally. Once warm pour over your favourite meat, vegetable or rice.
