Hi there! I’m Charlene, a prairie girl born and raised in the Bible belt of Western Canada.
Welcome to the insanity that is my life! On my good days I juggle motherhood, marriage, mental health issues, food allergies and cost effective living like a professional acrobat in a circus, all while trying to be as self sufficient, thrifty and eco friendly as possible without sacrificing convenience. On my bad days I binge on chocolate chips and spending hours indulging in mental travel on solitary trips around the world or immersing myself in a captivating story.
I am a teacher turned writer engaged in the effort to join the movement of thousands of work from home parents.
As a Mennonite girl who loves to create delicious meals for her family and friends I’m all about good old fashioned home cooking. A favourite student in my Oma’s kitchen (at least I like to think I was the favourite!), I am a keeper of traditional family recipes. Food is bliss and memories in our family.
I love gardening and in an attempt to be thrifty and semi self sufficient, (because lets face it… since I gave up my teaching career to follow my dream of becoming a writer and work-at-home mom, money is tight), I have a huge garden from which I grow and preserve enough fruits and vegetables to last us the winter.
I am the mother of 3 amazing kids who are the centre of my life:
The Traveling Teen: My oldest is a real country girl who always has her eye on the horizon and is determined to experience the world beyond it. She’s always looking for new experiences and places to be. She plunges herself into every family vacation and has recently begun travelling independently on mission trips around the world. She has a strong passion for animals which has involved us taking in countless stray dogs and cats in the past, often sick and starving. She has a huge heart and is full of empathy. She loves horseback riding, especially vaulting on horseback, science and aspires to be a doctor.
Waspbait, so called because for several years he ended up getting stung, bitten and chased by swarms of hornets almost every time he stepped into the bush. This does not stop him from loving the land though! He’s an avid hunter and for the last several years has provided us with ample wild meat to fill our freezer. He loves to work with his hands and is devoted to his father. He’s also spent the last several years working behind the scenes with the local community outreach centre to provide food and clothing for those most in need.
Princess Sparklebelt is our resident drama queen. She can take any situation to the next level. She loves acting, dancing, gymnastics, acrobatics, singing and fashion. She figures she will either join the circus or become a human rights lawyer. Look out world… here she comes!
Bulldog: I am also the wife of a Mountie, a brave and patriotic man. His work has taken us to many different regions in Canada and so I’ve spent the last 20 years living in many different communities and absorbing different cultures. Originally from Newfoundland he’s spent the last 25 years navigating his way around the oceans of fields in Manitoba. I’m pretty lucky to have a handy guy around the house. He can build or fix just about anything we need. Once he sinks his teeth into something, a project, game, and even an argument, he just can’t let it go. A real character he’s the life and entertainment in our family.
Welcome to my homestead!
